Selous Game Reserve

Selous Game Reserve covers more than 50,000 square km of area is the largest Game Reserve in Tanzania and Africa. Selous reserve was named after the Englishman Sir Frederick Selous, a famous big game hunter and early conservationist, and was designated as a World Heritage Site in 1982 by UNESCO due to the diversity of its wildlife and undisturbed nature. The attractions in Selous Game reserve includes:-

  • Abundance Birds species, over 440 known species of birds
  • Lions and Leopard are in large numbers
  • Over 50% of the endangered African wild dog and other wild mammals like buffalo, elephant, giraffe, eland, hyena, sable, hippo, crocodile, kudu, baboon, wildebeest, zebra, impala, hartebeest, colobus and vervet monkeys

Location

Selous Game Reserve is located in the Southeast of Tanzania about 450 km (285 miles) Southwest of Dar es Salaam city.

  • By road: Accessible by road only during the dry season
  • By air: Scheduled flight from Dar es Salaam
  • Railway line: Via Tanzania Zambia railway line (TAZARA)

Gurumet Game Reserve

Established in 1994 with an area of 2,000 square kms, Grumeti Game Reserve forms part of larger Serengeti Maasai Mara ecosystem, where by the annual wildebeest migration do take place between July and October yearly. The attractions in Gurumet Game reserve includes:-

  • Buffer zones for animals to come across for the purpose of searching water
  • Migration corridors for easy movement of huge herds of wildebeest and zebra

Location

Grumeti game reserve is located along the North-western border of the Serengeti National park in the Northern circuit of Tanzania.

Getting There

  • By road from Serengeti National Park, Bunda and Mugumu townships approximately 1 hr 45 minutes drive
  • By air from Arusha to Seronera and Forty Ikoma Airstrip (Approximately 1hr 30min flight).

Maswa Game Reserve

Maswa Game Reserve in the Northern circuit was established in 1962 and it covers an area of 2,200 square km. Maswa game reserve borders the world’s famous national park, the Serengeti National Park from where its attracts wild animals from the park during dry season. The attractions in Maswa Game reserve includes:-

  • A number of Rivers forming the main drainage course, which includes are Simiyu, Mbono, Semu and Kuna
  • Attractive yellow barked acacia and wild fig trees
  • Impressive populations of buffalo, lion, roan antelope, Cokes hartebeest, impala, Thomson gazelle and leopard

Location

Located along the south-western boundary of the Serengeti National park

Moyowosi Game Reserve

Moyowosi Game Reserve lies on the edge of the great central plateau between the East and Western Rift Valley arms was established in 1981 and it covers an area of about 6,000 Sq Kms of land. The Moyowosi Game Reserve attractions includes:-

  • Large populations of buffalo, Topi, Lion, Giraffe, Zebra, Hartebeest, Roan antelope, Greater kudu Waterbuck Sitatunga, Hippo and the Crocodile
  • Bird species to include wattled crane and Shoebill stock

Location

Located in Kigoma Region, in the western part of Tanzania [Western Circuit of Tanzania tourism].

Getting There

  • By road using four wheels drive car from Kigoma town
  • By chartered flight aircraft and scheduled flight
  • By central railway line from Dar es Salaam to Kigoma

Kigosi Game Reserve

Established in 1983, Kigosi Game Reserve is the third Game Reserve in Tanzania after the Selous and Rungwa Game Reserve and covers an area equivalent to 7,000 square km. The attractions includes:-

  • the largest floodplain and wetland ecosystem in East African reserves
  • Species of Birds and wild mammals

Location

Located between Bukombe and Kahama Districts in Shinyanga Region up to Urambo District in Tabora Region [Western Circuit of Tanzania Tourism].

Ugalla River Game Reserve

Ugalla Game Reserve is among the key Tanzania’s unique protected areas as it is a licensed reserve area allowing honey gatherers and fishermen to harvesting honey and fish for just six months in a year. With a land area of about 5,000 square kms was established as a protected area in 1965. Key attractions include the following:-

  • Ugalla River which runs through the middle of the park
  • Abundance of wild animals found in the area like Hippo, Crocodile, Elephant sable, Lion, Topi, Roan, Wild dog, and Greater kudu.

Located in the central-western part of Tanzania, in the eastern part of Lake Tanganyika [Western Circuit of Tanzania Tourism].

  • Springs and riverine valleys
  • Wild animals to include Eland, Roan, Lion, Leopard, Liechtenstein Hartebeest, Greater kudu, and Sable

Kizigo Game Reserve

Kizigo Game Reserve key attractions entail vegetation characterized by the unique Itigi thicket Miombo woodland forest that interspersed the open plains. This reserve has also rocky outcrops, scattered water holes, springs, and riverine valleys which form a basis for attracting wildlife to include Eland, Roan, Lion, Leopard, Liechtenstein Hartebeest, Greater kudu, and Sable. Kizigo Game Reserve was established in 1982 with an area covering 4,000 square kilometres.

Rumanyika Game Reserve

Kizigo Game Reserve key attractions entail abundance of wildlife to include elephants, elands, waterbucks, roan antelopes, giraffes, warthogs, lions, hippos and many bird types. The game reserve covers an area of land of about 800 square km.

Biharamulo Game Reserve

The Biharamulo Game Reserve was established with an area covering 1,300 square kilometres sharing the ecosystem with the Burigi Game Reserve. Key attractions in this game reserve include the following:-

  • Attractive Miombo woodland and savannah woodland that are found in the northern part of the reserve area.
  • Animals to include reedbucks, Steinbucks, Hippopotumus, and mammals like Elephants, Zebras, Sables, Roans, Antelopes, Topis, and Red collubus monkeys
  • Birds to include Martial eagle, Sacred ibis, Saddles, and Billed stork

Ibanda Game Reserve

Established in 1974, Ibanda Game Reserve covers an area of about 200 square kilometers. The game reserve is situated on the eastern bank of Kagera River, a boarder between Tanzania and Rwanda. Established in 1951, Rungwa Game Reserve covers a large area of about9000 Sq km of central and West Tanzania [Southern Highland Circuit of Tanzania Tourism]. This reserve gives visitors access to spacious game viewing. Key attractions for Rungwe game reserve includes:-

  • Many species of animals to include Lions, Leopard, Buffalo, Eland, Sable, Nibble, Greater Kudu, Grysbok, Klipspringer, Oribi, Hartebeest, Liechtenstein, Impala, Zebra, Hippo, Crocodile and Bush pig
  • Different varieties of birds

Usangu Game Reserve

Usangu Game Reserve with it’s mountains, valleys, grassland and Miombo woodlands is where you will find wildlife in their wilderness such as elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard and plains game such as greater kudu, waterbuck, bushbuck, topi, oribi and many more. The game reserve includes the Ihefu Wetland, the natural water reservoir for the Great Ruaha River.

Uwanda Game Reserve also known as Uwanda Rukwa Game Reserve is a reserve of the Rukwa Valley of southwestern Tanzania. It is an extension of Katavi National Park and covers an area of 4100 square kilometres. It includes almost half of Lake Rukwa.
